Mission Statement: The Pickaway Addiction Action Coalition’s mission is to prevent adult and youth drug abuse, addiction, overdose, and deaths.

Tobacco Committee   Amy H. had us approve the problem statement and our two sources of data: Problem Statement: Youth Tobacco Use in Pickaway CountyAmong all youth in the State of Ohio about 16.4% (1 in 6) currently use at least one type of tobacco product compared with 9.3% nationally. Roundtable   Amy H. had us break into small groups to discuss root causes to Youth Tobacco use.  We had 3 small groups in the office and one group on zoom. Amy H.’s question for us was “But why? We all discussed what we came up with in our groups: 1.Friends and FamilyNormalization – in the family home with second hand smoke exposure 3.7% tobacco products are from home (PRIDE 18-19) 13.5% use e-cigs at their friends’ house (PRIDE 18-19)Easy Access – get the tobacco from older siblings or parents or knowing which store sells to minors. 1 in 4 use e-cigs b/c family and friends have it so easy to access them.2. Mental HealthCurrent e-cig youth users reported always having poor mental health (30.5% which is significantly higher than those who reported never experiencing poor mental health (6.5%) (Tobacco Use Among Youths in OH 2021)1 in 5 youth think no risk in vaping (Nat. Tobacco Survey 2022) Vapes do not smell like tobacco and youth believe that it helps their stress and anxiety.3. FlavorAppeal of the different flavors (cotton candy, fruity, coffee and chocolate flavors)Doesn’t smell like “e-cig” so the fear of getting caught isn’t there42.6% Ohio youth use flavored tobacco (Tobacco Use Among Youths in Ohio, 2021) 
Next Meeting April 16, 2024 at 8AM at our PAAC office.  We will have the option for zoom.
