Host a “Parents’ Night Out” Event: Empower Your Community to Prevent Underage Drinking and Substance Use
Talking to kids about underage drinking and substance use isn’t always easy, but having the right tools and support can make a difference. That’s why the “Talk. They Hear You.” campaign has launched “Parents’ Night Out”, an interactive educational program designed to help parents and caregivers navigate these critical conversations.
What Is “Parents’ Night Out”?
“Parents’ Night Out” is a community-focused initiative that provides parents and caregivers with facilitator-led, interactive sessions—available for both virtual and in-person settings. These sessions aim to:
✅ Inform parents about the risks and realities of underage drinking and substance use.
✅ Prepare them with conversation strategies to talk with their children effectively.
✅ Motivate them to take action and engage in ongoing discussions with their kids.
How Does It Work?
SAMHSA has created comprehensive toolkits to help communities host their own “Parents’ Night Out” events. These toolkits include everything needed to plan, prepare, and facilitate an event, whether it’s a single one-hour session or a three-part series.
Each toolkit contains:
- A facilitator’s guide with step-by-step instructions
- Participant materials to engage parents and caregivers
- Presentation slides to support key discussion points
- Marketing materials to promote the event within the community
